BACKGROUND
Before 1760 the colonies were very free even though they were under British rule. The British government was
across the Atlantic Ocean. The colonies had their own leaders and learned to solve their own problems. Also, as Britain was often at war, it didn't pay much attention to the colonies
THE SEVEN YEARS WAR
Britain defeated France in the war in 1763. But the war had been very expensive. Afterward, Britain decided that its American colonies should help to pay its debts.
TAXES
To raise money, Britain forced the colonies to pay new taxes (Stamp Act)
The colonists protested against the tax because the British Parliament was taxing them even if they had
no representatives in Parliament.
In 1767, the Townshend Acts taxed tea, paint, paper, and
glass coming into colonial ports.
BASTON MASSACRE
In 1770 British soldiers fired shots into a
crowd.
BASTON TEA PARTY
cheaper than colonial merchants, settlers protested boarding British ships in Boston Harbor and threw their cargo of tea
in water.
INTOLERABLE ACTS
The British government then passed laws that were
even stricter.
CONTINENTAL CONGRESS
is a meeting where representatives from each colony met in Philadelphia to act together in 1774
EARLY BATTLES
The Battles of Lexington and Concord began the
American Revolution in April 1775: group of minutemen met the British in Lexington, a town on the way to Concord
SECOND CONTINENTAL CONGRESS
it met in Philadelphia in 1775. It brought together the military forces of the colonies to form the Continental Army. George Washington, in charge of the army, spent
months preparing his troops for battle.
BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL
The British captured Bunker Hill but they lost so many soldiers that the colonists claimed victory.
FIGHTING FOR INDIPENDENCE
On July 4th 1776, the Continental Congress approved the Declaration of Independence. With this document, the 13 colonies became the United States of America.
BATTLE OF SARATOGA
General Gates led the American Army to a great victory over the British.
FINAL BATTLE IN YORKTOWN
British army surrendered to the
Americans. However, there were still many
clashes for two more years.
THE TREATY OF PARIS
was signed in Paris by representatives of King George III of Great Britain and representatives of the United States of America and Canada on September 3rd 1783. By signing the treaty, Britain agreed that the United States was an independent country.
COSTITUTION OF THE USA
was drafted in 1787 and went into effect on March 4th 1789.
