Increasing flood risk
Building on floodplains
-
With rising population and the need for housing increasing – more houses will need to be built on floodplains in the future.
-
Climate change
It is likely that rainfall will be more extreme in the future due to greater number of storms. This is likely to mean more flooding.
However, more extreme summer temperatures and drought could reduce the risk in some cases.

Coastal flooding
Coastal flooding often happens as a result of storm surges. These are very large waves that are able to come far inland. They happen as a result of sea level’s being higher than normal due to the tides as well as strong winds producing very large waves.
