Special Education at BMIS
Classroom Teacher identifies need in student
Student is monitored for 1-2 months
Student is evaluated by teacher
Teacher gathers observations and evidence of need for support
Teacher completes learning support request form / assessment
Teacher consults parent about possibility of learning support, assessment and adjustments made
Parent GIVES CONSENT for student to be accepted into learning support
Student enters learning support and begins to receive tailored support from the team
Student is reassessed every month or at the end of the year (depending on student)
Student file is reviewed for any assessments conducted outside of school
Teacher continues differentiated instruction in class
Parent DOES NOT GIVE CONSENT for student to be assisted through learning support
Student does not receive additional support from learning support
Teacher continues differentiated instruction in class
Learning support reaches out to parent regularly to nudge towards student need
Evidence includes: samples of work, attendance sheet, etc
Teacher discusses with previous teachers on student behavior and work
Teacher notes other strategies used in class to differentiate and accommodate student
Student struggles with assignment
Student is consistently providing excuse for not completing work
Student is constantly distracted
Student is hyperactive and visibly struggles with work
Student does not participate or follow instructions
Student is more than two years behind their developmental ability
Parent/Teacher conduct listening interview about student performance and expectations
Learning Support notices student while in classroom (while helping other students)
Learning Support member notifies classroom teacher
Teacher begins close in-class observation of student
Parent expresses interest
Parent notifies teacher of interest
Parent notice student's low performance and distraction
Student has previously received learning support
Student does not complete homework or show interest in school
Student is performing lower than age group
Student asks for help
Student reaches out to parent, learning support member or teacher for additional support in class
