Nervous system - Coggle Diagram
Nervous system
-
Consist of:
Central nervous system (CNS): Coordinates our actons, gives instructions toall the body.
Consist of:
-Brain
-Spinal cord
Peripheral nervous system: Carries messages arounsthe body very quickly.
-Sensory nerves: Carry messages from the receptors to the CNS
-Motor nerves: Send instructions from the CNS to the effectors
Parts
Nerves
Made of: A group of neurons.
Neurons: Special cells that transmit electrical signals (impulses) containing information. :
Synapses: Connections between neurons.
1: An impulse arrives at the end of a neuron, chemicals are released.
2: A new impulse is released in the next neuron.
Central nervous system
Consist of:
Brain:
1- Processes the information from impulses.
2- Decides what to do.
3-Sends out instructions.
Spinal cord: Consist of: millions of nerve fibres.
Goes from the brain stem down the middle of the back.
Main route of information between brain and peripheral system.
Controls the reflexes
DISEASES AND ILLNESES
Neurodegenerative disease
Caused when: neurons in the brain come damage or die.
Gradual deterioration (affects people as they get older).
In most cases there is no cure.
Parkinson disease: Causes muscle problems, it also results in involuntary movements.
Alzheimer´s disease: Causes memory problems, difficulty in finding words. The patient may experince a change of personality.
Multipe sclerosis:Can cause loss of vision, uncontrolled muscle movemets and difficulties with balance.
Mental illnesses
Mental illnesses (also called psychiatric illnesses) are medical conditions that affect a person's thinking, feelings, moods and/or ability to relate to others. This can make everyday situations difficult.
Depression: Include feeling sad or hopeless, and not enjoying things.
Attention deficit / hyperactivity: Most common in children. When you have this illness it's difficult to sit still and concentrate, and are easily distracted
Schizophrenia:Affect people of all ages. People with schizophrenia may believe, see or hear things that are not real. Makes them confused.
Treated with: Combination of drugs and psychological therapy.
Reflexes
Are automatic responses to stimuli. The body reacts without waiting for the brain to make a decision.
Reflect arc: A route that the information in a reflex takes.
Replect arc example
-
3. Response: The signal is passed on to a motor neuron, which sends an impulse to a muscle in the arm (The effector). The muscle moves your hand away.
-
Def: Our nervous system coordinates and respond in differents situations, but sometimes we need to react very quickly.
Example: When you have to catch a ball that somebody throws to us.
