What is the message saying
Where and when does it take place
The goal is to grasp the meaning of the text God has intended. We do not create meaning out of a text; rather, we seek to find the meaning that is already there.
How to determine the author's message of passage being studied
You should always be able to determine the author's message, but you may not always know the audience's need.
The author's message is composed of a topic and an assertion.
The topic tells what the passage is talking about. The assertion tells what the passage is saying about what it is talking about.
The key to interpretation is context
Historical Context
Extra -biblical history(Egyptian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman
Biblical history(chronology of Israel, of Christ, or Paul's journey
Background on the author and audience:
Author's identity and background
Who were the audience, what was their background
Culture: social, political, architectural, economic, legal, and religious practices.
Geography
Literary Context: Genre,Poetry,Prophecy
Theological Context: the narrow and broad context of scripture,God's character, man's character, the unity of scripture
Linguistic content: grammer, syntax, discourse
