Court of Appeals

Montana is part of the 9th circuit, San Francisco, CA
Each court has a panel of judges that decide if cases were tried appropriately.
The judges can uphold the decision of the lower court and the outcome stands or they can be remanded for retrial.
If someone is convicted of a crime and they thought it wasn't fair, they can take the case here.
District Courts
Federal court judges are appointed by the President for life.
Lower federal courts are divided on cases over which they have jurisdiction.

Supreme Court
If the court declines to hear a case, the court of appeals decision is final.
1,000s of cases are submitted but only about 100 can be tried.
