The ranks or degrees of the police are similar to those of the Colombian armed forces, most of them were created in the government of President Rojas Pinilla. These ranks are divided into two levels: executive level and junior officers and direct level or officers.

The main objectives of the public function attributed to the police are to maintain security and order in public places; enforce the laws and protect citizens and their assets from dangers and criminal acts, and help us in the event of an emergency such as strangers entering the house, thieves, etc.

In 2020 the National Police is made up of approximately 167,623 people.
