Every nucleated cell in your body – all cells except red blood cells – have one kind of MHC proteins on their surface, called class 1 MHC. MHC 1 proteins present short chains of amino acids, proteins synthesize inside that cell. So, if a cell is healthy, the antigens on its MHC 1 tell that the cell is healthy. However, for example, if the cell is cancerous, making abnormal proteins, it will then fi bits of those proteins into MHC, which alerts immune cells that the is a problem, and basically asks to be killed.
Macrophages, dendritic cells, and B cells wear class 2 MHC proteins on their surface. Class 2 MHC proteins bind to fragments of exogenous antigens, being displayed to call the attention of other cells.
