Inter-Rater Reliability
-
-
-
Observers use the same behavioural categories and tally the behaviour each time they observe it occurring
-
If there is a strong +ve correlation between the scores then the observers are assumed to be reliable and ready for the real study. If not, more training occurs.
Event Sampling
The observers decide on a specific event relevant to the investigation and record it every time it is observed. this is useful when the behaviour happens quite frequently and could be missed if time sampling.
-
(-) If too many observations happens at once it may be difficult to record all behaviour - not be valid anymore
Time Sampling
-
-
(-) Some behaviours will happen outside of the intervals so the results may not be representative of all the behaviour and therefore would not be valid
-
Pilot Studies: when carrying out an observation it is useful for the researcher to do a pilot study first to check the suitability of the behavioural categories and the procedure.
The behavioural categories chosen should reflect what is being studied. Usually define categories for the behaviour they are studying and then record the number each form of behaviour occurs.
