LEARNING THE STUDENT ROLE
Kindergarten as Academic Boot Camp
Education must be considered on of the major institutions of the social life today
Education is a secondary institution --> people prepare for life
Education is an institution wich serves sociaty by socializing people into it through for a formalized, standarized procedure
Durkheim
The education process
is the means by wich society perpetually recreates the conditions of its very existence
Education = socialitation
Education is a part of socialitation process
The student role
The repertoire of behavior and attitudes defined as apropiate regarded by educators as appropiate to children in school.
Discipline in the classroom - Edith Kerr
Creating and maintaining a social structure where the teacher controls the behavior of the children
"Living with others in a small society" - learning to live by the rules imposed by the school
Types of students:
"The good student": submits to the rules and feels identified by them
The student who submits but won't feel identified
"The bad/problematic student": doesn't submit to the rules
Schools usually require of a psychologist to help with the last type
Features of the classroom:
Physical and social structures
Physical: the room being carefully organized physically for the teachers to be able to carry the class, unlike the children
Social: set of rituals and routines so the children submit to the teacher, being put in the real world through these routines
The day is divided in 6 periods, controlled by the teacher:
Serious time
Sharing time
Play time
Work time (they can ask to do it individual)
Clean-up time
Rest time
Spontaneous actions, interests or observations are not allowed or developed by the teacher
The imposed and strict order of the class breaks when the children start discovering the world and paying attention to something new and as the teacher doesn't want to spend time on this, is left out of the class
There is no room for discovering nor creativity, which the children would enjoy more
Elimination of creativity and encouraging of
stric obedience to authority
and
rote learning meaningless
Ruled out and forced participate into senseless activities
Calisthenics
Learning ritual oath songs
Learning with
no intrinsect meaning
on elementary school
But students have to do so as a clear instruction of the adults authority
Carring out assigned tasks because they have the objective to do so (no meaning behind it)
Students of sixth grade are forced to read social study reports and copy material from encyclopedia
without
a
clear objective
Learning process at the kindergarten
Teachers that take advantages of the inestabilities in the social structure to create actvities on their own
During Work Time
During Play Time
(outdoors)
Children learn how create a small world within the adult world (controlled by the adults rules)
Proper silence and mesuring actions = Play more as they want
Small groups are created and developed in semi-independent groups (
informal groups
)
These groups are sociologically observed
People find "holes" in this little world the children create
Imposed socialization = bureaucracy
