Characteristics of Birds

They are found in deserts, forests, mountains, prairies, and on all seas.
Birds have many reptile-like features, including amniotic eggs and scales covering their legs.

types of feathers
Contour feathers cover the body, wings, and tail of a bird. Barbs branch off from the shaft of these feathers. The barbs are held together by hooks. Barbs that become separated
can be rejoined like the teeth of a zipper.
A preen gland near the base of the tail secretes oil. During preening, birds spread the oil over the feathers to waterproof them.
Down feathers are soft feathers beneath contour feathers. They do not have hooks to hold the barbs together. This looser structure allows down feathers to trap air for insulation.
