The criteria of Birds & Reptiles
Birds
Basic features
Many adaptations are designed around flight.
Birds are endotherms, which means they generate body heat internally by their own metabolism
A high body temperature enables the cells in a bird’s flight muscles to use large amounts of ATP needed for rapid muscle contraction during flight.
Feathers
Contour feather
Feathers that cover the body, wings, and tail of a bird
Down feather
are soft feathers located beneath the contour feathers.
preen gland
secretes oil that adds a waterproof coating to the feathers
Lightweight bones
A strong, lightweight skeleton allows birds to fly.
The bones of birds are unique because they contain cavities of air.
Large, powerful flight muscles called keel attach to the sternum.
Reptiles
All reptiles have backbone, which means they are vertebrates.
They produce eggs. Most reptiles lay hard shelled eggs, but a few give birth to live young.
Scales or scutes are things that all reptiles have.
Reptiles cannot control their own body temperature, meaning they are ectothermic.
dry scaly skin that keeps them from losing internal fluids
