Auditory Enhancement
earliest research on cochlear implants started in the 1950s
wasnt till 1984 where cochlear implants began to be used to restore hearing in infants and adults
mechanical prosthesis for the inner ear
implant is secured inside the skull
sound and speech processor is worn externally behind ear
doesnt restore hearing, enhances sound
dont cure or eliminate deafness
parents need to do research before deciding or they may regret it if it doesnt work out in their favor
lead to problems or failure
incisions dont heal properly leading to removal of implant
risk of bacterial meningitis
vaccination is encouraged to prevent this

important to deaf people that couldn't use telephones
Captioning
open captioned movies first began in 1949
WGBH obtained federal funding to provide captions of ABC News
first captioning of commercial television
others considered this a hindrance
