Individuals and Societies/ Unit : What are the characteristics of natural environments? Grassland/ 11th March 2021/ lama Mohamed /9M/ Ms.AhlamZordok
Definition
Grassland is an area in which is dominated by a nearly continuous cover of grasses. Grasslands occur in environments conducive to the growth of this plant cover but not to that of taller plants, particularly trees and shrub
temperatures are often extreme in some grasslands, the average temperatures are about -20°C to 30°C., There are two main kinds of grasslands: tropical and temperate Tropical grasslands have dry and wet seasons that remain warm all the time. Temperate grasslands have cold winters and warm summers with some rain
Grasslands are wide expanses of land filled with low growing plants such as grasses and wildflowers. The amount of rain is not enough to grow tall trees and produce a forest, but it is enough to not form a desert. The temperate grasslands have seasons including a hot summer and a cold winter.
grassland is a biome, an area of land that mostly has grasses. There are wild grasses, and there may be some trees. Several parts of the world have grasslands. Grasslands are found in Africa, North America, Central Asia, South America, and near the coasts of Australia.
Vegetation
Grassland plants have evolved so that as long as their roots survive, they can grow back after a fire very quickly. Trees and other plants not adapted to fire cannot grow back quickly, if they even survive. As a result, fire helps keep the grasslands from being overgrown by bushes and trees and turning into a forest
example of plants:
Grassland plant adaptations include deep roots, narrow leaves and brightly colored flowers. Grassland plants, particularly grasses themselves, grow from the base of the plant rather than the tips. This enables them to survive the fires that commonly occur in the dry, hot climate of grasslands
as i said before there are 2 types of grasslands tropical and temperate Tropical grasslands have dry and wet seasons that remain warm all the time. Temperate grasslands have cold winters and warm summers with some rain
purple needlegrass, lue grama, buffalo grass, and galleta. Flowers include asters, blazing stars, coneflowers, goldenrods, sunflowers, clovers, psoraleas, and wild indigos.
Wildlife
Animals are able to survive the dry conditions of the grasslands using their adaptations as well. They are able to acquire water even when little is available. Some herbivores, like antelope, eat at night when foliage has the most water in them. ... Animals are able to satisfy their need for water in this dry habitat
animals example:
Small animals can climb underground into their burrows to stay safe, but grasses and other plants common to grasslands can't run away. Instead, they are specially adapted to survive fire. Grassland plants have evolved so that as long as their roots survive, they can grow back after a fire very quickly.
Elephants, bison, cheetahs, gazelles, lions, and tigers are some of the large animals living on grasslands. Rabbits, gophers, prairie dogs, and many bird, lizard, and snake, swift fox
A few of these adaptations are: Some animals, such as bison, have broad, flat-topped teeth and digestive systems especially adapted to feed on grasses. Many prairie animals have front legs and paws that allow them to burrow into the ground, where they are protected from predators
Example
animal - lions
Lions have evolved camouflaging patterns, stealth-based hunting techniques and vocal communications to adapt to their grassland habitats. Additionally, lions have evolved very effective ears for living in the grasslands, which allow them to hear the soft footsteps of their prey even when they cannot see it.
ions are adapted to live in grasslands or forests. Their skin colour camouflages with the yellow colour of the grass. This helps them to catch the prey. Also they have strong sense of smell which help them to sense the prey
plant- buffalo grass
Buffalo grass has adapted to grassland fires and sometimes grows better after a fire. The actual growing parts of buffalo grass are protected from fire by soil. It sends out new shoots from the roots or bottom of the unburned stolon buds. Seeds are also protected from fire by the burs they are enclosed in.
