Hydrocarbons
Organic Chemistry
In the past, organic chemistry referred to the compounds produced by living organisms. Those compounds create a big amount of carbon.
Now the term is applied to all carbon-containing compounds with the exception of carbon oxides, carbides, and carbonates that are considered inorganic.

Types
Alkanes
-
General formula:
-
-
Commercially important because they are the principal constituent of gasoline and lubricating oils and are extensively employed in organic chemistry.
Subdivided into linear straight-chain alkanes, branched alkanes, and cycloalkanes.
-
Alkynes
General formula for one triple bond:
-
-
The IUPAC system for naming alkynes employs the ending -yne instead of -ane for naming corresponding saturated hydrocarbon:
Hydrocarbons with more than 1 triple bond are called alkadiynes, alkatriynes, etc. Hydrocarbons with both double and triple bonds are called alkenynes.

Isomers
-
Structural isomers
-
The members of a group of structural isomers have different chemical and physical properties despite having the same formula.
As the number of carbons in a hydrocarbon increases, the number of possible structural isomers increases.
-
Stereoisomers
-
Geometric isomers
-
Affects the physical properties such as melting point and boiling point. They differ in some chemical properties too.
