COORDINATE BILINGUALISM
The child develops two parallels language systems. It means, for a word, the child has two signifier and two signified
There is no transference between the two languages.
COMPOUND BILINGUALISM
There are bidirectional transferences, which means, for and towards both languages.
The child has just one signified for two signifier; he is not able to perceive the conceptual differences between both languages, he needs the 2 languages to think and be communicated.

SEMANTIC AWARENESS
Is reflection on the meaning of words, sentences, and paragraphs.

The metalinguistic ability which implies understanding that words are formed by sounds (phonemes).

ADDITIVE BILINGUALISM
The term suggests that the acquisition of L2 is not detrimental to one’s L1, but is in fact, beneficial to the language user.
Total additive bilingualism occurs when one is highly proficient in both the cognitive-academic aspect and communication in both their L1 and L2.
SUBTRACTIVE BILINGUALISM
It’s the perception that the acquisition of L2 would be detrimental to an individual’s L1. This can be caused by the increased cognitive load due to L2 acquisition which consequently decreases competence in users’ L1.
