Adebayo Article
Main points
There are several barriers that contribute to Black and African-American from having positive health outcomes
Barriers include:
Racial discrimination
Language barriers
Mistrust
African-Immigrants have worse outcomes upon arrival and living in the U.S
Author's purpose
The author's purpose was to show how there are systematic barriers that Black and African-American immigrants face when using the U.S health system that contribute to poor health outcomes and there is a historical precedent for distrust in the U.S healthcare system and that same precedent has contributed to poor health outcomes
Agree/Disagree
Disagree
Agree
I agree with Adebayo's point(s) because they highlight the systemic barriers Black Americans and African Americans face when engaging with the U.S healthcare system. I think a point that really emphasized their argument was how they mentioned that Black People in the U.S have been experimented on leading to distrust and feelings of being "guinea pigs" which has lead to Iatrophobia in the community
Hudson Article
Author's purpose
The author's purpose in writing this article was to discuss and highlight how despite being in higher SES Black Americans still experience racial discrimination, if not more, and tend to have higher levels of stress and this is measured through coping behavior described as "John henrying"
Main points
John Henry-ing
A measure of high-effort coping, among Black/African Americans
a) Originally developed to measure, assess, and test the relationship between Black Americans and hypertension
Higher SES is correlated with higher levels of racial discrimination and higher levels of stress; which leads to poor health outcomes
Black Americans are more likely to use high-level emotional coping strategies that help them preserve in high stress situations in which they cannot make malleable change
Agree/Disagree
Agree
I agree with several of the author's points and found several of them interesting. I definitely agree that racial discrimination is a big stressor for Black Americans and definitely contributes to their poor health outcomes. One thing I wondered was how the social pressure of avoiding expectations (i.e upholding racial stereotypes) contributes to whiteness and the feeling of stress in BIPOC communities.
Disagee
I found these articles really interesting and was able to connect them back to past readings/discussions we've had in class and in other classes, I've had, specifically the readings on whiteness and salmon bias (but in this context talking about the health of Black Americans and African-American Immigrants)
