Module 12: Continence and Women's Health (pre-mindmap)
Overview
Very common condition (more than 1 in 3 affected, all age groups)
Large psychosocial impact (link to ICF when completing initial)
Feelings
Significant amount of time since I have treated this population; used to feel comfortable with straightforward to moderate cases.
Outcome measures was always something I faced difficulty with, with limited specialised training.
Often struggled with concepts around pelvic pain syndromes (although no clinical experience)
Opporunities/Benefits
refresh anatomy + physiology (surprised how much I had forgotten and was unable to list/draw!)
Increase knowledge around nerve issues (something I previously have struggled with clinically)
Nil experience with Male continence issues, prolapse
Difficulties
For specialist/ internal examinations accessing PT at base hospital may be difficult for some patients
Creativity
great resources available for patients on the continence foundation website-
Facts
Can be a complex area- with consideration to tone, reduced activation difficult to assess without specialist knowledge/equipment
often associated with other conditions I commonly see (such a lung disease, Parkinson's Disease)
Often need a MDT approach (e.g. Dietician for bowels/diet review etc).
