Hydrocarbons
What are Hydrocarbons?
They are organic compounds consisting entirely of hydrogen and carbon
They are groups of simple organic molecules that contain only C and H
C is Carbon
Carbon is found on group 14 of the periodic table and it is a nonmetallic chemical element.
Has four bonds
Only bonds with elements close to it on the periodic table
H is Hydrogen
Is found on group 1 of the periodic table
Forms only one covalent bond
Because it has only one valence electron
Some types of Hydrocarbons (SIMPLE)
Alkynes
Contain at least one triple-bonded carbon pair
Involves the sharing of 3 electrons
To create its chemical formula, this expression is used
Alkanes
The simplest form of hydrocarbons
many alkanes are flammable, this makes them good fuels
Natural gas
Buatane
Since they have a single bond, the formula for any alkene can be found by using CnH2+2
Alkenes
consists of molecules that contain at least one double-bonded carbon pair
They have a double bond
The chemical formula for the simple alkenes follows the expression CnH2n
Because one of the carbon pairs is double bonded, simple alkenes have two fewer hydrogen atoms than alkanes.
All of these, are named with a prefix of the number of carbon atoms in the molecule, in addition to their corresponding root ending
For example: (table for alkanes yet all simple types use the same prefixes)
Hydroxyl Functional Group
consists of a single oxygen atom bound to a single hydrogen atom (-OH)
Groups that contain this are called alcohols (remember hydrocarbons are extremely flammable)
Ethanol is present in alcoholic beverages

Since they are all using the same elements, you might expect that there's a limited amount of combinations, which is not true
