Film in Flux
Festival
Short Q&A before each film, chaired by Ollie.
-
Perhaps start to break things down into genres? Documentaries, fiction, animation
-
-
Upload films to Vimeo and website anyway, so people from across the country can watch the films (family members)
Lots of health and safety forms to fill out - talk to the SU about this, if there's specific forms to fill out for the Winston.

Submission guidelines
-
-
-
Google Form on our website which allows people to submit any file and give a brief description of their project.
One submission per film (don't upload the film three different times because you're in a group of three).
Speakers
-
Definitely have a Women in Film event with Sarah leading a panel, talking to female filmmakers in the department - perhaps contact the students who are making a documentary about sex work for this?
Talks
One talk per person, or less, depending on the person.
-
Any current film students that would like to talk about their projects. We need to prioritise student voices.
Potential speakers
Jonell Rowe - Graduated from the course last year, has industry experience
Jasper Cresdee-Hyde - Friend of Kat’s, our age, has industry experience, funded and made a feature length film that is now on Amazon Prime
Mark Herman - Bit of a long shot, distant family friend of Kat. Directed The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. I can have a go at getting in touch with him to see if he’d be up for doing something for us.
Ollie Tait - Also long shot maybe. Vague friend of Kat’s dad. Camera operator on things like Harry Potter and James Bond films. Ditto with trying to get in touch.
Simon Pegg - The longest shot ever. Alumni. MinuteMade said they reached out to him but unsurprisingly didn’t get anything back, but could still be worth sending an email or something

Given the difficulty we had in getting an accurate estimate for the number of films to be shown and knowing whether there'd be a festival at all, slowly, we lost the ability to be able to have guest speakers. Our last man standing was Mark Herman, but he was actually on holiday during the 8th - 10th June and unable to do a Zoom Q&A. We decided to focus on screening films instead.

Website
Kat can be reimbursed now, and I will be reimbursed later because I'm paying for a monthly subscription and will need to be reimbursed for the £66.04 total.
I want to get the blog up and running this week, will talk to Ruby tomorrow for "project spotlight". Each week we will spotlight a different student's work and check in with them.
Dates
1st-3rd June are the provisional dates, as this is a week after the official submission date for everyone's films. This provides only a four day turnaround, but I have a plan for this.
Deadlines :star:
First deadline: 18th April, end of Easter holidays, work from other projects and years. Then we will have a few weeks to watch films and sort through projects and get them into shape.
We decided to combine the deadlines and have just the one, the 25th May and allow students who have had to apply for extensions due to filming restrictions to hand in their films later (on a case by case basis).
Due to COVID restrictions, many students got extensions, so we moved our deadline again, to the 3rd June (noon) to make sure everyone could get in their dissertation projects if they wanted to.
Second deadline: 25th May. Same as everyone else's deadline for their films. Then we will have four days to watch the films, but there won't be as many.
Second and first years as selection committee: ask resource managers to send out a message on Blackboard asking people to apply. How many people should we need?
We should be letting in all the films honestly, because it's about screening everyone's work, but maybe asking second years for help with ushering?
Awards
Students voted for professionals to judge the awards but this is unlikely as Mark Herman is often busy. They are all often busy.
-
Selection committee? Would be good to set up a tradition of being judged by your fellow students, but not so close that people can take things personally.
We ended up deciding that given the year we've had, being overly selective about the films that are screened isn't what we'd want to do this year. Everyone should have a platform, as long as they follow the rest of the guidelines we come up with (e.g.: the film cannot be longer than ten minutes).
-
Professional judges: reached out to guest speakers we've had over the past two terms and heard back from Sarah Smither and Anne Marie Margerison. We also reached out to Alix Taylor from BFI Film Hub but she was unable to promise much.
Sarah then got in touch with her colleague Rob Holder, and Katie recommended Anthea Harvey to us. Only Anne Marie was able to make the in-person festival so I shared the films with the rest of the judges before time to give them a chance to watch films with plenty of time, as they are busy much of the time.

Tickets
List via Bristol SU? This way we can keep the tickets free. Is this possible? Or should we list via the Film Departmental Society
-
-
Venue
If we are able to do this in person, we'd like to use the Winston.
-
I cannot try and book the Winston until the SU reopens. And we don't have the money for venue hire. We shouldn't need it as the Winston is part of our department and there shouldn't be any performances scheduled in June.
