Jurassic Park: 3rd Iteration 2nd Hour
Realizations
Dinosaurs learning humans are easy to kill (134).
Expected vs. Found graphs/charts (183).
Why?: Add to suspense. Putting reader in the place of the character. More impactful to see the screen than being told what is on it (better communication/writing/builds the world).
Raptors population.
Wu and Hammond conversation: "The past is gone...at least a version of the past." (136). First indication they realize it is out of their control.
Move to Version 4.4: foreshadowing. Wants to modify the dinosaur behavior by slowing them down/domesticating them. Hammond is against that because "real" dinosaurs are what the people want.
Hammond's possible motivation behind this: I'm right! (failed with the elephant and wants to prove it is possible to make "life sized things").
Nedry stealing embryos: dramatic irony (Muldoon turns away just in time to miss Nedry leaving with the jeep).
Nedry: "I'm going to go get a coke." but grabs his bag (dramatic irony).
Dinosaurs
Found a dinosaur egg
Harding: THEY CAN'T BREED.
Dinosaurs have left the island: proof from prologue (Tina and baby attacks); Tim and Lexi see dinosaurs leaving on the boat.
Hammond: THEY HAVE NEVER LEFT THE ISLAND.
Raptors eating the rats: no one thought to investigate why the rat problem had ended.
Spliced DNA: amphibian (can switch gender) -there are not just female dinosaurs out there.
Dependent on lisine to live (attempt to control the population and ensure they will die if they leave the island).
Used x-rays to make them all sterile.
Computers
Intense reliance on technology to run the park.
Dennis Nedry is the only one who knows how the system works.
All linked to one system (power/security goes out, everything goes down).
Computer only looks for what it is told to look for.
Themes
Hubris
Everything automatic for ease; unfortunately no one goes out in the park.
Example: Stegosaurus eating poisonous berries and dinosaur eggs.
Cars on a track; can't go back. Metaphor.
We are experts and nothing can go wrong is the downfall and how they miss most things.
Control: In the attempt to control, they find themselves farther out of control.
Number of chapters labelled control: in the control room.
Quote: Details emerge more clearly as the fractal curve is redrawn.
Geometry to describe real life objects: Mountain example is the same shape far away as close up.
Almost identical on different scales.
