Correlations
Evaluation
(+) Suggests trends: Correlations can suggest trends that can lead to experiments - if a relationship between two variables is establishes then an experiment in the same area can be conducted to further knowledge of cause and effect.
(+) Useful when experiments would be impossible or unethical: used to establish the relationship between two naturally occurring variables that would be unethical during experiment. Provides insights.
-
(-) Correlations do not establish cause and effect: Only measure the degree if interrelationship between two variables - they cannot establish if one causes the other.
Differences
-
-
E: Control EVs so confident there are no confounding variables - C: Findings might be effected by other variables; a 'chance' relationship
E: Hypothesis states that there will be a difference in the DV as a results of the IV - C: Hypothesis states there will be a correlation or relationship between the two variables

Definition
Correlation analysis aims to discover whether or not there is an association or relationship between two different variables (co-variables)
It will establish the direction of association and also the strength of the link between the two variables
Positive
A one variable increases, so does the other one
Negative
A one variable increases, the other decreases
