DNA Tests and Ancestry
Example
Two sisters (same parents & ancestors) take same DNA test, one 10% French, the other 0%
DNA Tests
-
Cons
Whether you have ancestors from a particular region (can't tell us everything about who we are or where we're from)
Where DNA Comes From
Genome: 99% = shared among all humans, 1% = unique part of individual
-
-
-
Recombination
46 chromosomes → 23, chromosomes within
each pair swap some sections
-
-
-
Further Back
-
-
Without recombination = 1/4 from each grandparent, 1/8 from each great-grandparent, etc.
E.g., six generations back: without recombination = 1/64, with recombination = higher (percentage unknown) / lower (0%)
Sister example: doesn't have more ancestors from
France, French ancestors more represented in her DNA
Genetic Markers

-
-
Important Note
-
Can't reveal heritage from people outside database (e.g., indigenous people) → shouldn't be used to prove race / ethnicity
-
Further Back
-
Human interbred with Neanderthals → some people nowadays have (many) Neanderthal ancestors → can be both 100% French & 2% Neanderthal
