Hydrocarbons
Basic facts
-
-
-
Saturated hydrocarbon: only single bonds Unsaturated hydrocarbons: has at least 1 double/triple bond
-
-
-
Applications
-
Alkene hydrocarbons
-
By introducing ethene, fruit can be ripened artificially
-
Natural rubber, the scents of lemons, limes, and pine trees.
Alkyne hydrocarbons
-
ethyne is used as a starting material in the manufacture of plastics and other organic chemicals used in industry.
Treatments
-
Vapor Combustion Unit / Flare: used to destruct volatile liquid hydrocarbons, hazardous air pollutants, and volatile organic compounds. Considered an economic option.
Carbon absorbers: a stream of hydrocarbons is introduced to reactive carbon. Carbon removes the volatile organic compounds, releasing "free" air to the atmosphere.
