Jurassic Park: 3rd Iteration 1st Hour
Themes
Stubbornness and Hubris
Wu being so certain they can't breed (even after using frog DNA to fill in the gaps). (111-113).
Computer flaw in counting the dinosaurs (there can never be more than 238). Hammond's insistence the tracking system is fine (thank you Malcolm for pointing it out).
Lots of bugs in the computer program. Security system only in one area (power goes out, it all goes out). Too many things tied together.
Dennis only given limited information when developing the system. This means bugs have to be corrected while the system is up and running.
Tying up ALL the phone lines (convenient).
The stegosauruses are absolutely NOT eating the berries. It's impossible!
Corporate Greed: Dennis Nedry stealing the embryos.
Dinosaur Creation
Modified: partially dinosaur (amphibian, reptilian, avian)
No idea what they are breeding until it is hatched.
Survival rate is 4%
No idea how each of the dinosaurs behave.
Raptors can jump!
Characters
Tim: "Kids can see...They've got visual acuity we've forgot we ever had." -Grant
Double meaning
Kids are framed as a resource to Dr. Grant (experts in their own right).
Grant
Hammond
Focus is on the money and the "zoo" aspect without the risks.
Purpose of bringing the kids is as a marketing ploy to his investors (it's TOTALLY SAFE).
"You get the engineering correct and the animals will fall into place. After all they're trainable" (157).
Knows nothing, very self-assured, perception of dinosaurs.
Zoo Concept
Dinosaurs are very different from the animals in zoos.
Raptors especially agile, speedy, leatal, intelligent (learn), communicate with each other, kill for fun.
Malcom says animals in zoos get out all the time.
"Who would suspect the giant armadilo was a notorious cage breaker..." (164).
Wu: Do people want the "real" dinosaur or can we PLEASE domesticate and slow them through the engineering process.
Malcolm quote:
More details will come to light.
Fractal Curve: real objects in the natural world. Things look almost identical with the different scales (mountain looks the same close up versus far away).
