Ellis' CBT focuses on B (the beliefs). The therapist will help the patient to identify their own unhelpful beliefs and prove them wrong. Negative thinking is challenged based on evidence from the patient’s own experience.
Patients are taught to replace their irrational beliefs with more realistic ones and will learn to interpret their experiences in a more rational way.
Evaluation for CBT
this therapy gives patients the feeling that they have regained control over their lives by changing their thinking patterns and they can make a positive change.
Studies show that patients using CBT as a form of therapy rather than drugs are less likely to relapse
Patients need motivation to attend this type of therapy as it requires effort from the patient. A symptom of depression is lack of motivation so severely depressed people may not be able to access this treatment
