Formative
Definition: A Formative assessment is used to gather evidence of student learning. Formative assessment help teachers to adjust instruction and provide feedback to students as they learn a new topic. Helpful hint: I always remember that formative assessments are created to form instruction.

Interim/Benchmark
Definition: A Interim/Benchmark assessment is used to evaluate students understanding about a topic against state standards or learning goals.

Summative
Definition: A Summative assessment is used at the end of the lesson. It is designed to measure if the the student has mastered a topic or unit. Helpful hint: Summative assessments are a summary of what the students has learned during the whole unit.

Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are created to help teachers learn about their students achievement gaps and student abilities before starting a new unit.

Performance
Definition: Performance assessments are created for students to demonstrate their understanding about a new skill and to see how students transfer their knowledge about a skill. Performance assessments should be more open ended.
Example of a Performance Assessment: Students create a play about the different parts of the water cycle.
