Civil Rights Movement
Past Movements Inspired
Women's Rights Movement The National Organization for Women (NOW) was established by Betty Freidan, Pauli Murray, Mary Eastwood and Kathryn Clarenbach after they were inspired by the Civil Rights Movement. Just as African Americans fought for an end to segregated buses, women would fight for an end to discrimination in hiring and the military through the attempted passing of the Equal Rights Amendment and demands for reform.“Women organized support groups, held conferences, and sought to redefine themselves and their roles in society...They fought for an end to discrimination in hiring, not only in the professions but in blue-collar jobs and in the military.” (Martin Riches, 145 & 146).
Native American Rights/Red Power MovementThe Red Power Movement contained a concept very similar to the idea of black empowerment within the Black Power Movement and the Black Panthers. Protests like the Trail of Broken Treaties can very clearly be compared to the Selma to Montgomery Marches within the Civil Rights Movement because of the actions that had taken place and the purpose they were done for.“From 1969 to 1970 they established 18 chapters and were no longer a ghetto organization but also encompassed many still on the reservations. In 1971 they held their first national convention, where they stressed tribal nationhood, treaty violations and the need for positive images.” (Martin Riches, 158)
Gay Liberation Movement A few weeks after the Stone Wall Raid the “Gay Liberation Front” was formed and had an agenda that wanted to achieve complete sexual liberation through the abolishment of certain social institutions. “the gay bar movement increased as a result of the New York raid. Over 50 different organisations were estab- lished to protest on behalf of the homosexual community.” (Martin Riches, 150 & 151).
Responses: Accelerationism: Idea that if white supremacists can continue to increase the amounts of violence and riots enacted they can further encourage the start of a race war and separation between races in the world (Byman).White Lives Matter: Made to combat the Black Lives Matter movement and specifically draws a connection to the past because they have received acknowledgement from hate groups that were prevalent during the Civil Rights Movement such as the KKK; who have also used the phrase before (ADL &SPLC).
“There were white supremacists marching under the banner of Black Lives Matter, attempting to undermine an otherwise overwhelmingly peaceful movement towards social justice.” (Schneider)

Influence of Civil Rights Movement
“It is not a one man show. It is not the preachers' show. It's the people. The masses of this town, who are tired of being trampled on, are responsible." - Jo Ann Robinson (Martin Riches, 49)
. The form of unity and organization behind a mass movement is what paved the road for future protesters because of its effectiveness in the Civil Rights Movement. the combination of both boycotting segregated buses and the NAACP strategy of challenging the Jim Crow system within court is what influenced the federal district court into ruling on June 5th of 1956 that segregation on buses was unconstitutional. Such a monumental accomplishment for African Americans in America was done through the work of not only one individual but many people who were persistent and resistant to the racist system (Martin Riches 50).
Responses: According to the Equal Justice Initiative, once busing had begun in states such as Boston, white mobs would attack buses full of black students by throwing rocks, eggs, bricks, and bottles. White nationalists would also insight riots and partake in bombings in states such as Mississippi in response to the Civil Rights Movement. These actions were essentially done because of the impact that the Civil Rights Movement had; it was an attempt to stop the growth of equality and freedom in America.
Conclusion: Overall, the Civil Rights Movement and even movements that came before such as the Harlem Renaissance, built a foundation for the other movements of the time such as the Native American Rights, Women’s Rights, and Gay Rights movements.
Harlem Renaissance
Important Figures
James Baldwin “White means that you are European still and black means that I am African...We’ve both been here too long. You can’t go back to Ireland or England and I can't go back to Africa.” (Baldwin, 1969). This served as inspiration to the Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter movements because the point being made is that all Americans come from ancestry that originated in different parts of the world. Regardless of where they are from, Americans with either white or black skin are all equal with individualistic origins.
Langston Hughes “Hughes affirmed the radical aim of the Renaissance to present to white Americans what had been true all along: that blacks are humans worthy of respect and dignity, that black lives matter.” (Lebron, 123). Just like the Black Lives Matter Movement, Hughes wanted to instill pride but also equality into the reader’s mind; he is beautiful and part of America too, just like any other Americans; “Tomorrow, / I’ll be at the table / When company comes...Nobody”ll dare / Say to me / “Eat in the kitchen,” / They”ll see how beautiful we are / And be ashamed / I, too, am America.” (Hughes).
