Race and Blackness/Racial Discrimination
Purpose: Examines whether greater levels of SES are associated with increased reports of racial discrimination and ratings of John Henryism
Examined whether high-effort coping moderated the relationship between racial discrimination and depression
Target population: African-Americans
Main Points:
Some studies showed that the higher the SES, the greater exposure to racial discrimination compared to lower SES
Those with higher SES are more likely to work and live in integrated settings compared to poorer African-Americans
Defined John Henryism as a strong behavioral predisposition to cope with psychosocial and environmental stressors
Black and white women both reported higher John Henryism scores when holding higher status jobs
This shows how being a woman already is a health disparity and is harmful to mental health as well, this is what we have been talking about this semester
Agree/Disagree/Thoughts:
I has not really thought about higher SES populations having higher rates of racial discrimination, but now that I think about it, it makes complete sense
This population would also have much more exposure to things like microagressions, leading to more mental health problems
I learned what John Henryism is, I had never heard of this concept before reading this article
Purpose: To review communication challenges experienced by patients of African descent in the U.S. health care system
The focus is on discrimination, mistrust, health literacy, and impacts of culture and language barriers
Offer recommendations for improving health literacy within this popualtion
Agree/Disagree/Thoughts:
I like how the authors had separate sections for their topics, especially the one with historical context, this is something that is important to understand
I also agree with their recommendation for intercultural competence training
Reminds me of the book "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down" about health literacy and culture with the Hmong popualtion
Main Points:
Health Literacy: Educational and literacy rates are due to institutionalized racism and policies
Mistrust: with the geniuniness and not in the clinical competency
Impacts of Cultural and Language Barriers: Language based discrimination may lead to silence or avoidance of health care for fear of embarrassement.....this feeling should not be on the patient, it should be the responsibility of the health care team to take care of ALL patents, no matter their background, not put that stress on the pateint
