Importance
Political polarization
Because of the US's two party system the media ends up splitting between the two sides and supporting each of the contrasting ideas. The media itself may be what is causing the two party system to remain so dominant with US politics.
Within social media specifically people are more likely to have more extreme views and share these extreme views. This causes a larger polarization as both sides end up going a bit further but also interacting less with the opposing side as the media they consume will likely be reflective of their own views.
There is a limit within the voices heard within media/social media as people with more money are more likely to us social media to involve themselves with politics, which limits the perspectives seen despite social media being very open for anyone to be able to say something.
Fragmentation and polarization of news media may lead individuals to trust less in the news and their ability to report accurately on political events. This is seen by the fact that only 29% of Americans think that news sources get their facts straight and only 18% believe that they give both sides of a political issue.
Bias in media
Media can have a big impact in swinging their consumers more and more towards their perspective on issues, due to confirmation bias. An individuals taste towards a media is usually connected to the individuals ideology and the perceived ideology of the channel they watch. With time the individuals ideology becomes more and more like the channels ideology.
Media can have small aspects which demonstrate bias especially within choice of language. For example the word riot is much more used by right leaning sources as they used it both for the january 6th and black lives matter protests. In the left the word protest was much more predominant, however they also used riot for the january 6th incident. Overall media can show two very different stances and perspectives by simply phrasing and omission of certain information.
US liberals are more likely to spot bias within articles of Fox News than those that support their own views.
A study was conducted in 1985 where people were given pro-Arab and pro-Israeli network news from the 1982 massacre. Those who read these and identified with either side thought that they were biased against them, this was especially present in those who were considered to be more knowledgeable.
Media since last election
The 2016 election showed a lot of the power of media politically and how it can be spread quickly even if they are smaller news sources. A lot of the focus of the media of mentioning Trump gave him a lot of publicity which allowed him to have chance and eventually win the election.
If news sources recognize this there could be a lot less use of names about political issues if they don't want to bring attention to that person, or maybe a lesser use of their name within the main title.
Media consumption
A 2004 with 73,969 people where they proved a certain correlation between political identity and what news they think does the best coverage. About 90% of republicans chose Fox News and 70% of Democrats were split between CNN and PBS.
