Ch. 14 Soils and Mineral Nutrition, Cross-link Connection: Plants of…
-
Cross-link Connection: Plants of Dischidia Major are also ant-plants they form two kinds of leaves. Some are cuplike and clasp a tree trunk or branch others are hollow balloon shape. Ants live in both types where debris accumulates. The stem of the plant sends roots into the debris absorbing nutrients.
Cross-link Connection: Plants of alfalfa (medicago sativa) are used to feed cattle, horses, and other livestock. Like many species, this has root modules that contain nitrogen-fixing rhizobium bacteria. Consequently alfalfa can grow well in poor soil and produce protein-rich leaves, which are nutritious as animal feed.
Crosslink Connection: Sandy soil has large spaces between its particles that it cannot hold water well, it dries quickly after rain. It has a low field capacity. As water is pulled away by gravity it percolates downslope into valleys. Soil at the bottom of ravines has water available longer so more vegetation grows there.
