Assessments
Performance
Definition:
~A performance assessment is a more open-ended assessment. This requires students to perform an actual task versus having students answer questions from a list of answers (i.e. multiple choice)
~Teachers can then use what the students complete to assess what the students have learned and where there might be a gap in student achievement.
Examples:
- Student portfolio: This would be a collection of performance-based student work. This could include students' "best pieces" or "best work" and also their own evaluations of strengths and weaknesses.
- Creating their own science lab/ hypothesis: This project would allow students to show what they know about creating a science lab. This would give teachers a good understanding of what students know and don't know.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition:
~This is a form of testing that comes periodically throughout the school year. Can be an every 6 weeks test.
Examples:
1. 6 weeks exam- Students will take a test over things that were covered during the past 6 weeks. This will show levels of mastery in different content areas.
2. Chapter/Unit end project: Students will be expected to complete a project over things learned in the past unit/chapter.
Formative
Definition:
~process of monitoring and gathering evidence of student learning.
~This type of assessment can help to adjust instruction which will allow for enhanced feedback.
Examples:
- Exit slip:
~Students will list 2 things they learned and 1 thing they already knew from the lesson.
- Discussion
~Students will participate in a discussion after the lesson and will have to answer questions about what they learned or talk about what they learned.
Diagnostic
Definition:
~Diagnstic assessments are given to students and will inform the teacher where there are student achievement gaps.
~Diagnostic exams are often given on the first day of class or at the beginning of a new unit that way teacher can get a feel for what students know and don't know.
Examples:
1. Pre-unit test~ Students will take this before diving into a new lesson. This will allow for teachers to see where the whole class is at in terms of knowledge on the particular concepts.
2. KWL: The first part of this chart can be used as a diagnostic assessment. The "K" represents "What I Know" and the "W" represents "what I want to know." Students can fill this out before starting a unit or new chapter and turn in to teacher. This would also help the teacher see where the students are at knowledge wise on the unit.
Summative
Definition:
~Meant to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit and is used to see how students are mastering a specific standard or midway benchmark.
~Summative assessments are usually a more formal assessment.
Examples:
- Unit Exam- students will be expected to take this exam after the unit is finished. The unit will not be gone over again but the teacher will use scores to check if students reached mastery.
- State Test: Students will take the state-mandated test. Scores will be used for data to see the level of mastery of the state standards.
