SUDI/SIDS - safe sleep for infants - Coggle Diagram
SUDI/SIDS - safe sleep for infants
Significance
Incidence (rate of occurence)
General Population
Premature/chronic lung/babies discharged from neonatal units
Prevalence
2017-2020
Patients vulnerable - don't have a voice, can't advocate for their own safety
For own SCBU:
Rates in own dhb in last 3 years
2 cases in last 3 months
coroner's reports/medical summaries for deaths
Potential for positive impact by nurses
Teach safe sleep to all families with babies being discharged from neonatal units
Provide pepi pods for those considering co-sleeping or needing a cot who meet the criteria (SE/maori/pacific)
Role model (or discuss with parents why sleeping is different in neonates if not role modelling) safe sleeping practices
Teach parents CPR and choking skills - know how to recognise when their baby is deteriorating/appears unwell
Create safety plans for, and identify families that are high risk for unsafe sleep (e.g. smokers, drug users) and intervene (e.g. smokefree intervention, social work input + OT) where necessary
Considerations
Socio-cultural
Some cultures tend to co-sleep
Some culture disproportionately affected by SUDI
Also disproportionately represented in groups for risk factors for SUDI like smoking, SE factors, drug use etc.
Uphold treaty principles by protecting vulnerable groups (like maori)
Ensuring protection of maori without stereotyping or stigmatising by singling out Maori as an at-risk group
Economic
Smoking
Breast feeding - protective
Access to a pump
Limited maternity leave + need to go back to full time work
Baby in daycare from young age
Housing
Damp + poor ventilation/heating
Overcrowded - co-sleep out of necessity
Best practice
Provide pepi-pods for...
insert at-risk groups who are funded
