Summative
Summative assessment is comparing student's work with standards or benchmarks at the end of an instructional unit to evaluate student learning.
STARR: This is an exam given to students at the end of the year to measure how much the students have comprehended or learned about that subject over the course of the year.
Unit Exam: This is an exam given to students at the end of a unit and teachers are able to use the result to measure whether students have mastered the material.
Diagnostic
Diagnostic assessment are used to assess student's knowledge, strengths, and weaknesses before they present their instruction, a form of pre- assessment.
Pre-test: This is a test that is given before the start of a unit or before new material is being introduced to determine where the students are in terms of the content about to be taught.
KWL Charts: This is a chart where students write what they already know, what they want to know, and what they have learned.
Performance
Performance assessment is an assessment that makes students complete a task rather an answer a question that has the student pick the correct answer from a list.
Portfolios: This a collection of selected performance- based work that displays the students progression throughout the class.
Open- ended Response exercise: This can be an activity or assessment that has student's answer orally or through writing that prompts students to explore a topic.
Formative
Formative assessments are used to improve future instruction through feedback, thus monitoring student learning.
Graphic Organizer: The graphic organizer will have questions students have a to fill out pertaining to a certain topic. This is a great activity to analyze whether students understand the concept or not.
Exit Ticket: This can be questions or a question that is given to students at the end of a lesson to assess student understanding of the material.
Interim/Benchmark
Interim or benchmark are used to measure progress towards academic goals and establish an achievement data baseline, these are given periodically throughout the year.
End of chapter project: Students will have to complete a project about the content they learned during the chapter.
9 Weeks Exam: This exam is given at the end of a 9 weeks to measure what students have learned during those weeks of instruction.
