BACKGROUND - GOTHIC MELODRAMA, image, image, image, image, image, image,…

- - - - The plans of Renaissance buildings have a square, symmetrical appearance in which proportions are usually based on a module/aile/facade.
      - During the Renaissance, architects aimed to use columns, and pilasters as an integrated system. These are made according to specific roman/greek "orders" and can serve as a purpose for structure and decoration.
      - The dome was established frequently during this movement. Both as a very large structural feature that is visible from the exterior and interior. After the success of the dome in Brunelleschi's design for the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, the dome became an indispensable element in church architecture.
      - The presence of stained glasses and various other structures were not as prominent during this movement. When compared to Gothic, this style seems to look aesthetically simpilar.
  - - - Basic Plan: Cathedrals we extremely long and wide, with an intent of maximum interior space. With the help of this, the cathedrals were able to welcome a large number of pilgrims and were able to perform ceremonies.
      - It is important to note that few cathedrals purposely had sloped floors. This helped during the cleaning process as respective.
      - All cathedrals during this era had an elevation up to 3 stories. Not to forget, stained glasses played a main role in the structure of High-Gothic cathedrals as they covered the entire walls of the upper elevations. This allowed a great amount of light source into the building as well.
      - During this movement, there was a major change in the layout and type of pillar structures that held the cathedrals together. Rib vaults were introduced during this ear (type of pillar structure). This not only was visually and aesthetically pleasing, but helped distribute the weight of the columns evenly and effectively.
      - Flying Buttresses: This was a major feature during the High-Gothic movement. Walls and stained glass structures were supported with the help of these flying buttresses. This was essential, and without them the high windows/stained glasses would have been impossible to achieve. From the outside, these flying buttresses would be decorated with ornaments and sculptures.
      - Sculptures were a main part of High-Gothic architecture. Mainly saints, angles, gods or prominent figures would be made/sculptured. These were places all around the cathedrals, including the flying buttresses. These figures that are sculptured mainly portrayed formal gestures.
