CN modalities (6 functional ones)
this sort of goes with sensory and motor and which CN do this
modality 1
somatic motor
GSE
efferent: going away from CNS
somatic fibers to voluntary muscle
Modality 2
Visceral (organs) Motor
GVE- efferent
motor fibers to INVOLUNTARY muscle-smooth muscle
*there are no sympathetic CN nuclei i.e. no CN give rise to sympathetic fibers
four CN provide parasympathetic innervation to structures in head/neck (III, VII, IX, X)
Modality 3
Somatic Sensory
GSA: afferent- arrive at the CNS
general sensations
pain, touch, temperature, pressure
Modality 4
Visceral Sensory
GVA: sensory is always afferent. arriving at CNS
sensation from viscera: from organs to the CNS
Modality 5
Special Sensory
CN I & II
SVA
taste, vestibular sense, smell, hearing, vision
Modality 6
Pharyngeal/branchial somatic Motor
each arch is innervated by a single CN
CN V, VII, IX, X
