Pressure
-
-
-
If a fluid is allowed to move, it will always go from a higher pressure area to a lower pressure area
-
Materials in a liquid state are incompressible, which means they cannot be compressed easily

Density
-
-
-
If the density of the substance is greater than the density of the fluid, it will sink
If the density of the substance is less than the density of the fluid, it will float
-
Buoyancy
Buoyancy is the tendency of an object in a fluid to rise or sink due to density differences with its surroundings
An object will rise when the density of the object is less than the density of the fluid, the buoyant force on the object is greater than the force of gravity on the object.
An object will sink when the density of the object is greater than the density of the fluid, the buoyant force on the object is less than the force of gravity on the object.
An object will float when the density of the object is equal to the density of the fluid, the buoyant force on the object is equal to the force of gravity on the object.
-
Archimedes Principle states that the buoyant force acting on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid that is displaced by that object
