Diseases & Immunity
Pathogens
-
Defense against pathogen
Mechanical Barriers
Skin- Covers most part of body, regenerates if damaged
-
Chemical Barriers
Mucus: Made by goblet cells, trap pathogen so it can be easily removed from the body.
-
Immune cells
-
Produce antibodies: clump pathogen/ stop pathogen from entering cell, opsonizes pathogen, release chemoattractants
Active immunity -- Slow lasting, but long immunity
B cells that produce antibodies produce memory cells so that they could effectively fend off pathogen in the future.
Vaccination
Dead, altered pathogen. (Cann't cause illness because pathogen is dead) Contains specific antigen
Herd immunity: if large enough population is vaccinated it provides protection for entire population. --> Herd immunity has eradicated certain disease, such as smallpox.
Passive immunity -- body doesn't make it's own antibodies, or memory cells (Ready made antibodies from external source)
