Brough and Shresthova: Fan participation is not inherently resistant or complicit of cultural norms, rather, there is potential in how power is circulated through discourses and networks. Content, through fans, is a catalyst for mobilisation. Through telling, retelling, and remixing across different media platforms, content provides affective resources for potential collective action. Fan activism needs a broader understanding of civic participation rather than a traditional model. Digital media pave way for civic engagement to adapt fan-like strategies and interactions, fostering a flow between networked individualism (Wellman) and collective action. The life span of pop culture campaigns must also be taken into account when analysing fan activism.
