How does this relate to me?

On the authentic experience days, I was inspired by portraits exploring emotions and figures in strange environments.

Artists Lindy Lee and Virginia Coventry represented feelings and emotions which inspired me to explore the subconscious mind.

These works resulted in an investigation surrounding emotional capacities and our subconscious reactions to figures, words and environments

Investigating subconscious reactions

I've chosen frustration as my investigation as its a feeling of being upset or annoyed as a result of being unable to change or achieve something. This is interesting as it relates to the subconscious mind as the subconscious tends to pull me back to my comfort zone when trying something different.

I can personally relate to frustration as it is a daily occurrence and relates to the subconscious through an oscillation of positive and negative emotions.

Frustration originates from feeling of uncertainty and insecurity which stems from an inability to fulfil needs or goals. Frustration is a common emotional response to opposition, related to anger, annoyance and disappointment.

Frustration occurs daily through the internal sources of a loss of self-confidence or self-esteem in certain social situations. I am frustrated most days by not achieving what i plan on and get annoyed very easily.

How would I show frustration through the figure and environments?

Frustration is evident in figures through facial expressions and emotions. In environments frustration can be evident in obstacles that must be overcome daily that make it difficult to attain a goal with satisfaction.

I would show frustration through the figure by lino-printing a portrait with reference to an image and place emphasis on the forehead as this is the mind and reflects emotions the best through the eyebrows and forehead lines. I would place a person in the middle of a road or under a tunnel creating an obstacle.
