Global Wind Belts
The Coriolis Effect
The Coriolis effect is when Earth's rotation causes moving air and water to appear to move to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere.
Prevailing Winds
-
The prevailing westerlies are steady winds that flow from west to east between latitudes 30N and 60N, and 30S and 60S.

-
The cell at the highest northern latitudes is also a convection cell. There are also similar cells the southern hemisphere.

Local Winds
Sea and Land Breezes
A sea breeze is a wind that blows from the sea to the land due to local temperature and pressure differences.
A land breeze is a wind that blows from the land to the see because of local temperature and pressure differences.
Like global winds, local winds occur whenever air pressure is different from one location to another.
