Why would a European country want to become a part of the EU?
The European Union is set up with the aim of ending the frequent and bloody wars between neighbours, which culminated in the Second World War. As of 1950, the European Coal and Steel Community begins to unite European countries economically and politically in order to secure lasting peace.

Neutrality: The state of not supporting or helping either side in a conflict, disagreement.
A referendum (plural: referendums or less commonly referenda) is a direct and universal vote in which an entire electorate is invited to vote on a particular proposal and can have nationwide or local forms. This may result in the adoption of a new policy or specific law.

The EU has put in place a set of labor rules to ensure strong social protection. It includes minimum requirements on working conditions like working time, part time work and they're rights (as workers )
Why would a country not want to become a member of the EU?

They have the thing with neutrality. They even joined UN in 2002 after a referendum; previous referendum the 80s failed. They also had a referendum to join the EU at the beginning of the 90s but failed by a small margin.

They had two referendums, one in the 70s and one in the 90s to join; both of them failed even though the government was supporting joining the EU.
