How to identify struggling students
Struggling students: students who you may feel need to be watched or tracked over time and can be for academic and/or behavioral purposes.
Type 1: Students who are repeatedly not ready for class or have behavioral problems, but react well to classroom management procedures
Type 1 Solution: taking away P&B points, given Rewards points
Type 2: Students who are repeatedly not ready for class or have behavioral problems and show no improvement, regardless of teacher intervention.
Type 2 Solution: Try approaching the student to figure out the cause of this behavior. If problem persists, set up 1:1 meeting with the counselor.
Type 3: Students who create negative classroom environment and student culture.
Type 3 Solution: Give strong warnings but do not focus on emotional discipline. Report to counselors immediately
Protocols for teachers in reporting and letting counselors know
When you believe that a student is struggling or needs extra care,
Add that student’s name to the Student Watch List Google Sheet with the level “I” and email the student’s counselor.
If you continue to have issues with the student/see no improvement, raise the level to “II” and email the student’s counselor.
If you believe the student is detrimental to school's environment, raise the level to “III” and have a conference with the counselor.
To expel a student, teachers and the student’s counselor need to gather a significant amount of evidence. Please keep a good record if you suspect a student will enter this level.
Special arrangements: students can be put into support classes after school or ELL classes if their academic grades are not sufficient enough. There are no special education classes.
