The American
Revolutionary War
INTRODUCTION
The American Revolution was the war in which
Great Britain’s 13 American colonies won their independence.
The colonies became a new country, the United States.
The revolution began in 1775 and ended in 1783
A colony is a region of land that is under
the political control of another country.
In 1765 the British passed a law called the Stamp Act, all the printed materials in the colonies had to be produced on stamped paper produced in London carrying a stamp.
In 1767, the Townshend Acts taxed tea, paint, paper, and glass coming into colonial ports.
As a protest, colonists
boarded British ships in Boston Harborand trew
their cargo of tea into the water. Is the Tea Boston Party
In 1770 British soldiers fired shots into a
crowd. This event became known as the
Boston Massacre.
The British government then passed laws that were even stricter. The colonists called them the
Intolerable Acts
The colonists realized that the colonies had to act togheter, in 1774 met in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. The meeting was called the Continental Congress.

Meanwhile an important battle took place at
Bunker HillThe British captured
Bunker Hill but they lost so many soldiers that the
colonists claimed victory
Battle of
Saratoga, in New York: in 1777,General Gates
led the American Army to a great victory over the
British.
The Battles of Lexington and Concord began the
American Revolution in April 1775.
The last major battle of the American
Revolutionary war was at Yorktownwhere the British army surrendered to the
Americans. However, there were still many
clashes for two more years.
On July 4th 1776, the Continental
Congress approved the Declaration of
Independence.
The Constitution of the USA was drafted in 1787 and went into effect on March 4th 1789
The Treaty of Paris
was signed in Paris by representatives of King
George III of Great Britain and representatives of the United States of America and Canada on
September 3rd 1783. Britain agreed that the United States was an
independent country
Before the war the colonies had a lot of freedom. they were under British rule but the colonies had they own leaders and lerned to solve their own problem.
