Hutton and Lyell
Lamarck
How would Hutton and Lyell explain the Grand Canyon?
What where Hutton a Lyell's ideas about the age of the Earth and the process which shaped the planet?
What is an “acquired characteristic” according to Lamarck?
What ideas of Lamarck’s were proven wrong?
Malthus
Artificial Selection
What is artificial selection?
Could artificial selection occur without inherited variation?
Influencers of Darwin
Jean-Baptiste Lamarck
Charles Lyell
Thomas Malthus
Alfred- Russel Wallace
James Hutton
Showed Darwin that the earth was far older and anyone had anticipated. And if life was very slowly altered into what it was today, then Darwin's theory would have time to play out
Malthus believed that species must be contained in order to prevent overpopulation. From this prediction charles darwin wondered if certain organisms in a species developed characteristics that help them live a longer life.
Even though his predictions we believed to be incorrect, Lamarck still provided the first theory of evolution that the world had seen. Even though Darwin proved his theory of "Inheritance of acquired characteristics", the thought of it gave way to Darwin's theory of natural selection
Charles Lyell's synthesising and perfecting of Huttons work allowed Darwin to get a better idea of how old the earth was, how we knew this, and how it could affect our perception of the world
If it were not for wallace then Darwin never would have published. Wallace had developed a very similar theory as darwin had and when he asked his friend to approve of his work, Darwin sent him his own theory. They then worked together to publish the "On the Origin of Species"
Something that the parent gains during their lifetime. For example, a severed limb
How did Malthus influence Wallace?
Malthus's theory on how populations are contained feed into the theory that Wallace and Darwin came up with. If the population is contained then what could help an organism survive better, and could this be passed down to its children and help them live longer and more fertile lives?
The evolution of another species that is controlled by humans or some other species. Ex. Dog breeds
No. You can't make a species evolve without a trait that the next generation can inherit
His theory of "Inheritance of acquired characteristics"
They believed that the layers of rock in the earth can tell us the age of it, and can hold hidden truths about earths past
Layers of history and proof that the earth was older than what the church had told them
