Jurassic Park: 1st Iteration 1st Hour
Ignoring Lots of Signs
Martty Guitierrez, researcher at Biologic Reserve, being "positive" it was a basilisk lizard.
Not intentionally deceptive, just limited knowledge/perception of what is possible.
Richard Stone in Dr. Simpson's lab dismissing Alice's identification of the drawing as a dinosaur.
Pattern of bites on children and sleeping babies.
Details left out.
Lab technicians assumed the gamma ammo methionine hydrolase was a lab contaminant and did not report it to Dr. Cruz (the doctor in Puntarenas). (28-9).
Guitierrez told the parents it was an allergic reaction to the lizard saliva, but left out the part of how rare it is and how Tina's reaction was too severe/not normal.
Lizard details: three toes, moved like a bird, thick tail, long neck, walked on its hind legs, chirping sound/vocalization, bites larger (size of thumb-prints)
Foaming saliva: experts dismissing the odd reaction/foaming saliva. Not a "normal" reaction. "Lizards can't have rabies, Ella!"
All experts dismissing her observations and drawing, despite it not lining up with their preconceived notions (19).
Themes
Save yourself at the cost of others.
Midwife dismissing the three lizard attack on the baby as SIDS.
Richard Stone- Didn't want to look stupid by bringing the half-eaten lizard to a museum and claiming it is a dinosaur.
Unless you are in the "circle" of experts, your opinion is ignored.
Scientists not talking to each other in different departments.
"experts" ignoring "technicians" and "children"
Ellen's random plastic surgery motivation to go on the trip. Why include it? Why include a character super obsessed with their looks? Perpetual stereotyping of women obsessed with appearance? (possibly a gender criticism).
Possibly set up to contrast daily problems against the very different ones to come.
Possibly to demonstrate the lack of regulation in the plastic surgery arena to compare to the lack of regulation InGen had to go through to establish the island/experiment.
The more widespread an idea, the more acceptable it is.
Discussing knowledge openly leads to further discoveries.
Why include this first iteration?
Show the experiences of limited knowledge of what is happening.
Reader's insight into the universe it takes place in.
Secrecy and limited knowledge of the public.
Experts cannot agree/not sharing information with each other (Ego).
"Lizards can't have rabies" -using existing knowledge to draw absolute lines in what is possible and not possible.
Dismiss children and women's perspective.
Tina had to prove how observant she was first (shirt observations) before taking her word it only had three toes (20).
Alice's knowledge as the mother of two dinosaur obsessed kids dismissed because she was "just a technician" and "active imagination" (29).
Quote on 1st Iteration Page
Describing the iteration which is coming up: little things/issues which don't mean anything right now, will make sense and foreshadow future events.
First iteration picture is minimal, but will fit into the other pictures later on.
Ian Malcolm: a mathematician/scientist in Jurassic Park.
