Introducation: Synthetic Phonics is something that "Many English speaking countries use" (Phonics Bloom, 2017). The definition of Synthetic Phonics is "A method of teaching where words are broken up into the smallest units of sound (phonemes)." (Reading Eggs, 2021). Children learn syntheic phonics in steps. The first step is the children will learn the letters in the alphabet, and once they know this, they will go onto step two, which is where they will put the letters of the alphabet together to make sounds like S and H makes the sound sh. Before Coronavuris I had seen synthetic phonics used around the room at the different nurseries I have been to for example display boards, phonics booklets and circle time. There is something commonly used in primary school, and it is something I was taught when i was at school was ti break the words up to hear the sounds, for example dog was d-o-g. And doing this we would touch our fingers to out chin. D-o-g blended together makes dog. "This is a critical synthetic phonic skill." (The Five from Five Reading Project, 2019). Synethic phonics is turning simple letters into something more complex.
