Pre-Assessment for Differentiation
Grade 10 English
Literary Elements and Devices
Students will read a short story and fill out a literary elements and devices graphic organizer
High-Achievers
These students were able to identify literary devices that were used in the short story and how the devices were used to develop a larger literary element. They also tried to explain how the devices contribute to the overall purpose and the message the author is trying to communicate
Assessments to track students' learning
Students will submit one analysis of a short story as a formative assessment. The teacher will provide feedback on the students ability to identify literary devices and to discuss how the devices were used to develop a larger literary element
Students will submit a draft of the short story they are writing to get feedback before they work on the final draft
Differentiated Activities
Students will be given more complex short stories to work analyze
Students will work on writing their own short story using literary devices they have identified in one of the short stories they have read
Final Product
: Students will write a comparative literary analysis essay using the three-part thesis comparing one of the short stories they have read and the short story they have written themself
Some Knowledge
These students were able to identify literary devices that were used in the short story but were not able to explain how the devices they have identified help to develop a larger literary element and/or how it contributes to the overall purpose of the author
Differentiated Activities
Students will work on analyzing a short story together with the teacher
Students will read more short stories and practice analyzing how literary devices are used to develop a larger literary element and how authors use them to communicate a message
Final Product
: Students will write a comparative literary analysis essay using the three-part thesis comparing two short stories they have read

Individually students will submit analysis of one short story and the teacher will give them feedback on students ability to identify literary devices and discuss how the devices were used to develop a larger literary element

These students struggled to identify literary devices and literary elements that were used in the short story
Differentiated Activities
Students with Special Needs
Students will work on reading a simple short stories together with a teacher and practice identifying literary elements
Students will work in small groups to analyze literary elements of short stories and discuss how these literary elements (theme, setting, plot, characters..) affect the story
Final Product:
Students will read a simple short story and fill out a graphic organizer with the different literary elements they have identified and will write a short description of how these elements affected or shaped the story
Assessments to track students' learning
Students will submit an analysis of literary elements on a short story they have read to get formative feedback
ELL Students
Students will be given short stories that are at their reading level and will be given literary devices (not more 3 at a time) to focus on at a time. The teacher will work on analyzing one short story with them as an example
Students will work in small groups to analyze short stories by identifying literary devices and discuss how these devices are used to develop a larger literary element
Final Product: Students will write a comparative literary analysis essay using a thesis statement comparing two short stories they have read. Students will be provided with a template to use when writing their essay and can also access an exemplar.
