Structure of Proteins
-
-
Amino Acids
Linked together by peptide bonds. Which consists of a condensation reaction between an amino group of one AA and a carboxyl group of another.
-
The size of a protein is recorded as it's mass in dalton, or its molecular weight.
Structure
-
Tertiary
3D arrangement of AA's, stabilized by hydrophobic interactions between non-polar side chains and disulfide bonds. Highest level of monomeric proteins, divided into distinct regions called domains.
Primary
Linear sequence of amino acids that make up the protein, Each protein has their own unique amino acid sequence.
-
3 Common motifs
-
Zinc Finger- composed of alpha helix, 2 beta strands help together by a zinc ion. Common in proteins that bind DNA and RNA polymerase.
Coiled Coil: 2,3,4 alpha helicies wrapped around each-other. Common in fibrous proteins
