Moving Beyond Salmon Bias/Health is Political
Purpose: To observe the health status of Mexican-origin males as they cross the Mexican border
To asses whether unhealthy migrants are disproportionately represented among those who return
Provides new theoretical considerations of return migration and furthers the discussion between health and migration decisions
Main Points:
Begin by looking for evidence of health-related return migration among Mexican males
Then ask whether migrants' health status is associated with return migration
Lastly, investigating whether access to medical services in U.S. is modifying patterns of voluntary health-related return migration
Defines salmon bias
VOLUNTARY: Three factors that may be creating these health-related migration patterns: medical returns, diminished labor supply/earnings, and preferences for family renuficaiton
INVOLUNTARY: Deportation, is overlooked within migration selection research and theories
They found that voluntary and deported migrants are less likely to report poorer health
Purpose: Explores the political nature of health and includes an overview of health disparities and health inequities, focuses on the population of Latinx, states that health is political
Main Points:
Defines health disparities and relates it to Latinx communities and populations
Socal determinants of health and Latinx popualtions
To improve the health of Latinx popualtions, communities, political will, and commitment are needed
We must all be political agents
Agree/Disagree: I like that they take about voluntary and involuntary migration, I wish they had gone a but more into the health data collection of involuntary migrants, how that system works
Agree/Disagree: I strongly agree that health is political and that there needs to be more health policy change within our government, health is also political on an international scope as well, not just a nationwide scope, for major change to happen our world leaders need to make policies that will benefit the populations health...example is climate change and air pollution
I like the inclusivity of the trans community in this paper
Agree that we need to all be political agents, to get the notice of government officals
